Guided Snowshoe Tour to Red Mountain Mining District
Saturday, Feb. 12, 2022
This September 14th, the UWP is leading a hike on the Grey Copper Trail. The trail is a pristine and scenic historic trail in the Red Mountain District. The hike will run parallel to and eventually cross Gray Copper Creek before climbing past scenic waterfalls and lovely meadows to end by the Vernon mine north of Red Mountain #1. It’s a moderate and beautiful two-mile trail, four miles round trip.
Please meet us at the Ouray Visitor’s Center at 10am with your good boots and plenty of water, we’ll car pool to the head of the trail from there. Check the UWP website for cancellations or postponements.
Author Jonathan Waterman gives a talk on his experiences and research on the Colorado River. Published in two books: Running Dry and The Colorado River: Running Through Conflict, Jon calls attention to the multitude of difficulties facing the river and the people dependent upon it.
Supplying vital water to more than 30 million Americans living in the arid West, the Colorado River is one of the most diverted, dammed, and heavily litigated rivers in the world. To learn more about the river, and the people depending on the Colorado, Jon traveled the length of the river. From the Rocky Mountains to its Mexican delta, all 1,450 miles. Join us when we listen to Jon share insights gained on the river about the challenges facing the Colorado, and us.
Mr. Waterman’s books will be available for purchase at the event.
Show your love for UWP on Telluride Gives Day
On December 15, 2016, the Telluride Foundation has once again provided a fabulous way for every single citizen to conveniently donate to the Uncompahgre Watershed Partnership (UWP) and other local nonprofits. Through www.telluridegives.org, you can contribute to our organization, make a difference in your community, and celebrate the magic of the San Juan Mountain region. This fundraising event is a timely, important way for UWP to bring in the dollars we need to continue our work into 2017, which will include:
- new abandoned mine remediation projects in partnership with local, state and federal public agencies, mine owners, contractors, and other nonprofits;
- water quality sampling each month at four locations for Colorado’s River Watch Program, including hands-on field activities with Ridgway third graders;
- public outreach and school watershed education programs;
- the San Juan Mining Conference, to be held in Ouray this year, to highlight research and mine remediation approaches for improving water quality;
- clean up activities at Ridgway’s Rollans Park along the Uncompahgre River as part of the town’s “Adopt-a-Park program;
- the 10th annual Ridgway River Festival, a family-friendly celebration of the River and our community; and
- NEW this year: an objective, science-based study of whether the periodic releases from the Ouray Hydropower facility to remove sediment have any significant impact on water quality and aquatic life.
Please take this opportunity to support these essential projects by giving through Telluride Gives Day, next Thursday, Dec. 15. Please go online to UWP’s Telluride Gives page (https://telluridegives.org/npo/uncompahgre-watershed-partnership) and make a financial contribution.

Join organizers from the Ouray Ice Park and Uncompahgre Watershed Partnership to help restore the natural resources in the Uncompahgre River Gorge. Historic use by the early settlers left mining, railroad and other industrial debris, while more recent gorge visitors left construction debris scattered around – much of which was cleaned up during the 2018 Love Your Gorge event. In 2019, we are continued to remove debris, as well as addressing erosion issues around the top of the gorge. For 2020, we will be planting some trees, picking up litter and doing other important work.
Lunch donated by Ouray Grocery. This event is partially funded by the Frank L. Massard Trust, and affiliated with American Rivers National River Cleanup and Ocean Conservancy International Coastal Cleanup. Tour provided of the Ice Park after lunch.
You’ll want to join us this year – we’re a fun group! Please wear layers as the morning and shadowy canyon (all day) can be cold but the sun is intense. Wear sturdy shoes (hiking boots would be great), sunscreen, gloves, and a hat and/or sunglasses.
This event will follow public health orders and COVID-19 safety best practices. Please bring your face mask and be prepared to wear it when we meet in the morning and on the tour. We will also be separating volunteers in smaller groups for increased safety. If you are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms during the weekend of Love Your Gorge, please refrain from coming to the event.
Minors (12 and up) are welcome and encouraged to join our event, but must be accompanied by an adult or provide a waiver signed by their parent or guardian.
A free guided field trip to view and learn about watershed conditions in south Ouray and along Camp Bird Road. Funded by the CDPHE Non-Point Source Program.
Please join UWP from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. to learn about watershed ecology, UWP’s projects, and watershed restoration. This is a great opportunity to learn about the Upper Uncompahgre River Watershed with scientists and UWP leaders, in a special, high-elevation wetlands area impacted by legacy mining.
We plan to carpool up to field trip destinations. Please plan to either take additional passengers in your vehicle or to ride with other trip participants to the field trip sites. The meeting location at 1:30 p.m. will be shared after signup.
