The 9th annual San Juan Mining and Reclamation Conference and 3rd Annual Innovation Expo are both happening in Silverton this year, so the two will be conjoined to focus on changing approaches in both mining and reclamation. The 2019 conference will be an opportunity to step back and look at the bigger picture of mining and reclamation in the San Juan Mountains. The Innovation Expo will highlight changes and innovations with a focus on technological development and business opportunities to bring those innovations to market for more widespread use.

UWP is collaborating with Colorado Parks & Wildlife (CPW) to host one of the hundreds of sites across America and the globe to hold the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ on June 22. Research shows drowning has become the leading cause of unintended death for children ages 1-4, ahead of car accidents, birth defects and cancer. In recent years, drowning deaths at Colorado lakes and rivers have also increased.
The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson (WLSL) encourages participation in swimming lesson programs because swimming lessons save lives. UWP and CPW want to share that message and tips on safe water recreation including the importance of wearing PFDs (personal flotation devices). WLSL began in 2010, and is presented by the World Waterpark Association with support from American Red Cross (ARC), and many other national organizations.
For the first time in Ouray County, Ridgway State Park will hold the lesson at the Swim Beach at Dutch Charlie and it will be taught by a lifeguard from Ouray Hot Springs Pool. We invite the whole community to come and participate to raise awareness about swimming safety and spend a fun afternoon at Ridgway Reservoir. All ages are welcome as the main activity is a swimming lesson that will be valuable for young and old.
Join the Uncompahgre Watershed Partnership and Colorado Parks & Wildlife at Ridgway State Park for a cleanup around Ridgway Reservoir. Prepare for cool weather and possible precipitation. The cleanup will go on – rain, snow or shine. Volunteers can meet inside the Dutch Charlie Entrance of the park at the marina boat ramp.
Park staff will provide coffee, tea, orange juice, apple oatmeal, and banana bread. Prizes for volunteers will include hats and stickers, with the top collector getting a gift card from RIGS Fly Shop & Guide Service.
Co-sponsored by RIGS Fly Shop & Guide Service, Gunnison Gorge Anglers, and American Rivers.
All ages are welcome! More details and what to bring will be shared after signup. Sign up below so we can plan for the number of volunteers. Questions? Tanya Ishikawa at tanya@uncompahgrewatershed.org.
