George has lived in Ridgway since summer of 2017 with his wife Andrea and daughter Laurel. They had an opportunity to move to the area and jumped at the chance to raise their family here. They came from Denver and have so far really enjoyed trading the big city for starry skies, mountains out our doorstep, and life in Ridgway. George has enjoyed exploring and getting to know the community, as well as checking out local peaks and trails via running, mountain biking and skiing – some of his favorite pastimes.
George has also been a whitewater kayaker and rafter for many years which helped launch an interest in river health and ecology. He spent a summer in college traveling nearly the entire length of the Colorado River, from the headwaters to its crossing into Mexico, floating and exploring various sections of the river corridor. Floating the Colorado River is still one of his favorite trips and has been able to raft or kayak many sections over the years.
George’s passion for rivers and the outdoors also helped to spur professional interests and a career in environmental management, including water quality assessment, remediation and river restoration (on hold for now while he enjoys new Dad life!). These experiences have given him a strong appreciation for the importance of healthy rivers, their place in the landscape, and people’s connection to their rivers. His hope in becoming a UWP board member is to help support river health and foster community engagement with the Uncompahgre River watershed.
